Whammy! The All New Press Your Luck (2002)
Um, it isn't that bad as everyone is yelling about...
OK, I've read the reviews about how bad it is. I for one, think it isn't that bad of a show, but of course not without it's flaws.
The double whammy - OK, I"ll agree it is useless and really didn't need to be in there. I guess GSN/Fremantle wanted to find someway to add mess to it, but this isn't it.
The host - Newton, well, I guess he is OK, though he tended to overemphasize a lot.
New Round 1 - Just a different strategy, I guess.
Prizes over cash - Budget's fault. GSN is no CBS when it comes to budgets. Obviously CBS had the cash to give away during its run, and it reaches out to a bigger audience than GSN does.
Overall - Not that bad of a remake. Could be better if it was on some other station, but I guess no one else was willing to take a chance.
Monopoly (1990)
What was Merv Griffin thinking?
It's nice that Merv Griffin decided to try to put Monopoly out there as a game show. Unfournately, it simply turned out to be a bust. My memory of the show is scant at the very least, but I remember that it was pretty complicated, and I was confused as to what the rules were. I don't fault the host in anyway, considering that he wasn't given a good show to host, and so it was gone in 13 weeks, only airing 13 episodes total. The rules, were just blah, simply too complicated for the average viewer (like me at the time) to understand quickly.
I wish this would be brought back, but maybe with some simpler rules to follow it easier.
Greed (1999)
Um, yeah.
OK, so it was a Millionaire rip-off. But enough of that. Woolery did a really good job hosting. Overall not a bad show, but there was one huge problem that stuck out. Why did they rely on polls and obscure facts for the upper 4 questions? Couldn't they come up with something that we might actually be able to guess? Like dates? As for the no safe haven thing on that show, it creates a scenario in which a person that took the terminator opportunity and was eliminated actually won more than the other contestants!
Too many flaws, otherwise not a bad show. Maybe a safe haven would have been something to consider, since the top 4 questions were ones that I don't think anyone would be able to get easily?
Match Game/Hollywood Squares Hour (1983)
Rayburn = Good, Bauman = Bad.
I admit, I've seen Rayburn doing the Match Game a number of times on GSN. That was a really good show, pretty funny. He continues this on the Match Game-Hollywood Squares hour.
Bauman on the other hand. Why did NBC get this guy to do Hollywood Squares? Granted I never saw the Marshall version of Hollywood Squares (I wasn't even born before he aired) but with Marshall just coming off a huge run on it, it would seem that he would get the nod for this. The questions were more funny then the celebrities, which is one bad thing, but Bauman ran the Hollywood Squares part at a slow pace, much slower than what I would have expected.
Super Match, no real comment on it, not a bad bonus game.
Overall, not a bad show, but Bauman was awful.
