Godzilla vs. Kong (2021)
Let Them Fight
This is the Titan movie we have all been waiting for and it has been well worth it.
Having watched this both at home and then on an IMAX screen it is definately the big screen movie the world has been waiting for since the pandemic began yet so many out there are already critical of the movie saying the plot ruined the film..... absolute rubbish as both the previous Godzilla and Kong films have all pointed towards the Hollow Earth as finally we get to travel there and discover its secrets.
The human element in this film is far better handled as has been heavily panned in previous films but here we get just the right amount of interaction which isnt a lot considering this is a movie about Godzilla and Kong.
And when these two titans meet its a visual masterpiece,if their first battle on board the Navy Vessels in the Tasman sea dosent leave your mouth dry then hold on as the best is yet to come. The final battle which finally takes place in none other than Hong Kong and its wonderful to see the film makers finally paying tribute to the birth place of Godzilla and need I say a little arch nemisis he has battled many many years ago, throw in Kong and the carnage never stops, there is also a clear tribute to Gareth Edwards Godzilla with the opening credits of the film, skull crawlers, warbats you name it they are all here.
Interestingly it seems the Synderverse fans have started an online hate petetion against this film warning everyone to avoid it at all costs, shame really as I really enjoyed the new Justice League but you just cant deny the box office figures after only less than a week$122.000.000 and $70.000.000 of that was from China alone,.
In the theatre and I am in New Zealand the theatre shows were sold out people cheered, punched the air, jumped out of their seats and gave the film a massive standing ovation as the final credits rolled and this film deserves every bit of the formentioned, its a non stop roller coaster ride from start to finish.
The Alamo (2004)
A Personal Journey From A Very Very Impotant Moment In History
Without a doubt the most faithful adaptation to one of the most important moments in history and the battle at The Alamo really is that important.
Considering the troubles this picture had from beginning to end in being made,Ron Howard stepping down as director, production issues from start to fisinsh to the original release of the movie its oh so ironic that like many movies that have suffered the same in the past the more time that passes the more this movie becomes beloved and requarded as nothing less that than a masterpiece.
Patic Wilsons portrayal of William Travis is heartbreaking, his arrival at the Alamo with the line "I'd Like To See What Im Fighting For" to his in my opinion speech to the men " We Will Sell Our Lives Dearly" a moment in film histort that alone derserves an ACADEMY award.Billy Bob Thornton As the myth, the legend that was Davy Crockett, here he shows that Crockett despite all the legend that went with his name that Crockett the man was as humble and down to earth as any other brave soul that fourght within those walls,Carter Burwells Music is so iconic for the time, there are moments it will send chills down your back and fill your eyes with tears.
Reading a lot of the reviews it is obvious that most like myself think this is a movie that deserves far more praise than it was ever given in 2004 on its release and justly so,it shows us bravery, honour and the 189 men who gave their lives were just like you and me .
Remember The Alamo
Deep Rising (1998)
NOW WHAT
Just one of the great tag lines as well as TIME TO GO that you will pick up while watching this fantastic homage to monster movies from director Stephen Sommers. Before The Mummy,The Mummy Returns,Van Helsing and G.I Joe there was Deep Rising, and what a rising it is,it has everything you could ever want in a movie, action, adventure, extreme amounts of blood and gore fantastic performances from the entire cast and probably the last time you will ever see Rob Bottin create and yes in this movie he goes digital instead of practical but his creation is well worth waiting for.
Having aged like a fine wine over the past 20 years Deep Rising is a wonderful fun ride and a must watch.
Star Trek: The Motion Picture (1979)
The Boldest Trek Of Them All
Of everything that is Star Trek this is without a doubt the boldest voyage the Starship Enterprise has ever taken.
A Machine Planet Sending A Machine To Earth To Find Its Creator and not till the final 20 minutes does the absolute WOW factor reveal itself as to who this machine is.
As a lifelong Star Trek fan I really appreciate this film and the more times I watch it I love it even more as this film has every element that makes Star Trek the incredible story that it is and yes there is still a lot of hate out there towards this film but for me it is simply the perfect Trek of all,the return of Kirk,Spock,McCoy,Sulu,Chekov,Uhura and Scotty, the incredible intorduction the the new Enterprise, the magnificent new theme and incredible score by the legend himself Jerry Goldsmith,Douglas Trumbull,John Dykstra creating simply amazing visual effects throughout the entire film that give Star Wars a run for its money any day and at the helm none other than director Robert Wise who shows why he is the legend he is as a director, every shot in the film is so beautifully crafted and shot,I cant say I think its long overdue that Paramount release this film in 4K with a Dolby Atmos Soundtrack but I imagine it will happen sooner than later.
The War of the Worlds (1953)
The Original Invasion & Still The Best
Creating movie history is quite something but this is what George Pal did in 1953 as he brought H.G.Wells timeless classic to the world in vivid Technicolour, the first encounter with the Martians as they destroy everything in their path is a sight to behold and for its time the effects that were created still look as glorius today as they must have in 1953 not to mention the incredible soundscape that was created for the film, with this film finally to grace a 4K restoration with new 5.1 soundstage mix created by none other than Ben Burtt one can only imagine how this movie will continue to thrill audiences now and forever more.
Journey to the Center of the Earth (1959)
Jules Verne Would Have Been Proud
With the great James Mason at the helm 20th Century Fox was sure to have a big hit on their hands with this journey and indeed they did. There have been many adaptations of Journey over the years yet none have ever tried to capture the same grandeur or spectacle that director Henry Levin did in 1959,after all, after reading Vernes classic novel and probably without a doubt one of his most treasured and loved works this is the Journey you would want to see adapted to the big screen. Although certain aspects of the 1959 Journey are different from Vernes novel much of the picture is written in a way to enable the audience to take such an incredible voyage with our actors without getting into to much technical detail, yet many scenes from Journey represent passages from Vernes novel page for page. For its day Journey incorporates some truly incredible sets and effects, its a motion picture that can only truly be appreciated on the giant screen, composer Benard Herrmanns score is quite perfect, the music plays along with each scene with such precision,it is so well written ,not to mention the now infamous scene and believe me,fans of Raiders Of The Lost Ark will see just exactly where Gearge Lucas and Steven Spielberg got their idea for from a so called rolling bolder.I suspect they must both be big fans of this classic. Much of Journey was filmed in giant caverns and caves however it is when our explorers reach the world within a world that you can really start to appreciate Journey in all it greatness, the then effects team that worked on the picture did a remarkable job here, the massive sets that were built, the fabulous encounter with prehistoric creatures from a bygone era,the lost city of Atlantis and the incredible final moments including the volcanic shaft through which our explorers finally return to the surface of the earth....Jorney is a truly wonderful motion picture from the grand days of Hollywood
Dark Light (2019)
A Little Gem That Deserves To Be Praised
Now and then you come across a little movie like this that seems to have passed under the radar, this is one of those great little movies that keeps you watching from beginning to end, hands up to Jessica Madsen who gives a great performance and to the practical effects team of this movie who deliver some wonderful moments without the help of todays all so often C.G.I.
Well worth your movie watching time but watch it with the lights out.
Arlington Road (1999)
The Masses Always Have To Have Someone They Can Blame
This incredible movie was never given the attention it so deserved, incredible performances from both Jeff Bridges and Tim Robbins and an ending that will leave you simply gobsmacked, this is a thriller you will not forget for a long time.
Alien: Covenant (2017)
Thank You Sir Ridley Scott
Forget the bad reviews from those who are payed to do so,this is the Alien movie everyone has been waiting for and I expect this will be a massive earner for Fox reguardless of all those out there who have nothing better to do than pick every moment of this movie to pieces. In a nutshell Sir Ridley Scott has given us everything we have been waiting for and we even get a chestburster that on a whole isn't as incredible as the original Alien from 1979 however the one thing it is is violent yet if your going to mention a birthing scene then the backburster has to be the one that made me feel rather uneasy, its brilliantly executed and we get to see it all plus the build up to the scene is as intence as anything you are likely to have or will ever see. This is a great movie for Alien fans, its bloody...very very gory...intense and on a visual style you need say no more than you have the master himself at the helm Sir Ridley Scott. As long as there is an audience everyone will always compare each follow up to the original as they always have yet as Sir Ridley says "This Is My Baby""By The Time I'm Finished With It Its Going To War Of The Bloody Worlds" enough said, safe to say this movie is amazing, not perfect but still the best Alien movie we have been given in years
Remember (2015)
Incredible
Rarely does a motion picture have you glued to the screen to the point that you just cant take your eyes away from every moment that is happening in front of you. "Remember" is such a movie....and with screen legends such as Christopher Plummer and Martin Landau you simply are in for a treat unlike I have seen in a very long time,I could not take my eyes away from this movie and let me tell you that the movie builds to a truly magnificent end that will no doubt have both your whits and your jaw both dragging on the ground. A truly stellar cast with as expected incredible performances I just cant say enough about "Remember" it is a beautiful movie as much as it is thrilling and as I said with an ending that will really blow your mind.
The Black Hole (1979)
The One Disney Wants You To Forget
Well it seems that over the years Disney has tried to distance itself from 'The Black Hole' in fact it is still one of the few back catalog films that Disney has as yet refused to release on Bluray Format and to be honest I cant figure out their reasoning for doing so. Following the impact of Star Wars in 1977 every major movie studio jumped on the band wagon and began investing huge amounts of money into what they hoped would be a rival to Star Wars and remember in only a short period of 3 years we were given Star Trek The Motion Picture,Battlestar Galactica,Alien but to mention a few and then Disneys 'The Black Hole" As a young child I remember well the hype and promotion that went with the releasing of The Black Hole,The trailer was amazing, the advertising on T.V,the posters,Disney were really hoping to knock Sar Wars of its pedestal. Unfortunately this did not happen, mainly due to film critic's panning the movie even before it was released but Disney took us on a trip unlike anything we had ever been on before with some very mind bending suggestions,a lot of movie goers just didn't get it,the ending I mean and for that reason and word of mouth the movie became an incredible failure both at the box office and with Disneys credibility as a movie maker. Yet through it all and over the years as so many movies that failed at the box office The Black Hole has become a real classic in its own and justly so,it has everything you could want in such a movie...its got the good guys...its got the bad guys who are led by an even badder guy who just so happens to have at his side one hell of a sycopathic robot..sure Star Wars had Darth Vader but The Black Hole had Maximillion and his creator Dr Carl Rendhart played to perfection by the late great Maximillion Schell,we also got two quirky little robots, one voiced by none other than Roddy Mcdowell and finally a cast of just about who's who in Hollywood at the time. All in all The Black Hole has its flaws but its still a movie that deserves a place in the great science fiction films of the 20th Century
An Adventure in Space and Time (2013)
Thank You Bill...Your Legacy Continues
A truly wonderful tribute to the beginnings and origins of Doctor Who told in a way that only one could expect it to be told. There is drama, there is humor and of course there are tears in fact if the last 5 minutes of this amazing tribute don't have you reaching for the box of tissues then..well I'll leave it up to you to watch. My final thoughts do hint on the final moments of the movie in which so many people have totally missed the point of why such a scene was filmed or why such a cameo (you'll have to watch to see who) was included, this really irked me after reading all the negative feedback about the scene so here I am only to say that when that scene does arrive think of these little points as the scene plays out... Doctor Who has been on air for more than 50 years and it will no doubt still be on air in another 50 years. It is watched in over 120 countries around the world It is the BBC's biggest revenue earner not to mention its star is one of the highest paid actors in Britian. If you are a Doctor Who fan of if you have never ever seen Doctor Who watch this incredible heart warming tribute to its origins..after that there is another 50 plus years of catching up to do.

Rise of the Planet of the Apes (2011)
Apes Rule
I think its a pretty safe bet to say that "Rise Of The Apes" is without a doubt one of the best movies to come out in 2011. Quite frankly there just hasn't been anything this year that has rocked audiences quite like this movie has and justly so. Weta Digital have once again proved that they are number one by creating the most photo realistic apes to ever be seen on the big screen. $54.000.000 on its opening weekend I cant see anything knocking "Rise Of The Apes" off its perch for a while.20th Century Fox were on the ball at last, they spent some time developing this project and the wait and time spent was well worth it I would say it will be a pretty fair bet to say that this will get the nod for best picture at the Oscars,it will surely win with visual effects but I so hope the academy recognizes the talent of Andy Serkis at last. Finally,as we are in store for another two installments lets hope Fox has seen the light and allows director Rupert Wyatt to continue the story,he took a budget of $90.000.000 and made his picture look like it had cost three times as much. Now the big question is...who in the world will Fox choose to play the ever important role that was made so famous by the much missed Charlton Heston.
Sunshine (2007)
Danny Boyles 2001
It never ceases to amaze me just how critical people can be or how they will pick a movie such as Sunshine to pieces without simply sitting back and enjoying. Understanding Sunshine is quite frankly more than just a group of people strapped to the largest bomb mankind has ever made but more to the fact that it is look into the minds of these individuals and the effects such a voyage might have on each individual, take a moment to consider just how such a responsibility might effect your own thinking. To begin, this is Danny Boyle to a tee,he creates some wonderful moments between each of the characters for example the first viewing of the planet Mercury as it glides across the face of the sun,the camera simply expresses the look of wonder on each and every member of the crew and his style of never quite showing us the sole survivor of the doomed Icarus 1 yet his image is firmly embedded in every scene he is present. Much like audiences failed to understand the ending of 2001 so many years ago on its release it seems the same effect has happened with Sunshine and many consider the ending boring, even going as far to say it is the worst ending to a movie they have ever seen, lets understand the ending however because it is not meant to be a happy ending by any means it is simply put an ending that is meant to relay beauty, the chain reaction of the Stella bomb igniting and the awesome power of the sun finally meeting at so called ground zero and for a split second the doomed sole survivor Cappa is caught between these two immense forces colliding,he experiences the true beauty of Sunlight, this moment in the movie to me sums up Danny Boyles film making style period. The score created for the movie by band Underworld is perfectly suited and each cast member takes us on their own personal journey thanks in part to the wonderful direction from Boyle himself. On a whole yes Sunshine does have its flaws but instead of picking it to pieces as so many have I suggest you sit back and enjoy Danny Boyles journey to save our most precious planet from extinction
Hannibal Rising (2007)
Not For The Faint Hearted
Simply brilliant,of course with a new director comes a different vision but what makes Hannibal Rising such a wonderful addition to the Hannibal Lecter story is the amazing performance given by Gaspard Ulliel,a young actor who has since gone on to become one of Frances most popular actors. He is so believable as the tormented young Hannibal haunted by the visions of his sisters unfortunate end his mind set on seeking revenge on those who brought about his sisters death that in the process he becomes what we have all come to know him as Hannibal The Cannibal.I found myself almost cheering for him as one by one he seeks out and like his sister torments and executes each of the men who have made him into the monster he has become. Don't be fooled by the bad reviews the critics gave this movie,it stands alone as a worthy addition to the story of Hannibal Lecter with an amazing performance by a brilliant young actor.
The Fly (1958)
The Fly (50 Years On)
I do so hope that 2oth Century Fox give "The Fly" the treatment it deserves when they finally release in High-Def,simply watch on a large widescreen t,v and 'The Fly' looks every bit as impressive now as it did over 50 years ago. The magnificent Vincent Price gives one of his all time best performances and to add in the final moments of the movie he speaks a series of quotes that seem to have become common language. I recently read a autobiography on the making of this timeless classic and of course I finally came to the chapter in the book where the entire filming of the spiderweb scene spoke of,actor David Hedison spent over a week filming this scene and he said that once the filming was complete and the shot was finally put together he was simply horrified at just how horrific the scene was,it wasn't until after the shooting of the picture was over that the sound engineers took Hedisons voice and made him sound as he did in those final moments, and its a final few moments that you never forget,OK so the puns and jokes aside that have come throughout the years this one scene still scares and makes people turn away over 50 years later, lets face it the entire feel of the movie is filmed in such a way that you are made to feel uneasy but when we finally get to see the tiny fly screaming "Help Me ..Leave Me Alone..Help Meeeeeee" maybe its not enough so as the spider finally chomps down on the helpless fly it gives that last and final blood gurgling scream..its just down right scary. After 50 plus years The Fly continues to be a movie that still scares people, even if its for that final few moments, but it is a magnificent piece of film making from the golden age of Hollywood. A true classic that deserves every bit of praise now as it did over 50 years ago.
Paul (2011)
Comedy At Its Very Best
Now and then a film emerges and does everything it is meant to do,makes you laugh from start to finish. Simon Pegg and Nick Frost have done it again and I am oh so pleased we don't have to wait a lifetime between them getting together to work on a new project, the chemistry between them is simply magic, one could almost call them the Laurel and Hardy of the 21st Century. Throw in Seth Rogan and Sigourney Weaver and be ready for all hell to break loose on the big screen. Paul hits your funnybone from the first scene to the last and the humour is infectious,I haven't heard an audience laugh so much in the theatre since..well since 'Hot Fuzz". Lets hope that Mrs Pegg and Frost continue to team up on such a regular basis, the world of cinema is a much better place thanks to them both.
Braindead (1992)
Peter Jacksons King Kong Of Horror (With Tongue In Cheek)
Before 'King Kong" before "The Lovely Bones" or "Lord Of The Rings" Peter Jackson was nothing less than the master of gore,he pulled out all the stops and wasn't afraid to be as explicit as he could to shock the audience with buckets or blood and entrails yet at the same time make sure his audience had the best roller-coaster ride of their lives while in the theatre. Speaking as a 100 percent Kiwi I like so many thousands of other New Zealanders knew the world stage was beckoning after the release of this classic,in New Zealand we knew this movie simply as "Brain Dead" although the title was changed for American and overseas audiences I can tell you not many directors say a handful have ever dared to be so graphic on the big screen, yet Peter Jackson did so and the world took notice, read a few of the reviews from people who have seen this movie and you can tell that even now it continues to delight and thrill. In its release the faces of so many well known New Zealand actors, mostly from our television screens showing up to be either torn apart or to have their hearts ripped from their chest was such a hoot, audiences were howling in the theatres plus with a dought 'Brain Dead' contains probably the finest and funniest moment in cinema history of a priest showing what other skills he has apart from being able to hold mass every Sunday, and his now classic line "I Kick Arse For The Lord" had us all rolling in the isles. If you haven't seen it but read a review before doing so with any such movie of the genre I kid you not, this is one of if not the best example of what happens when a master film maker does things his or her way...the result is magic.
Superman (1978)
Still Amazing After All These Years
After the huge success of "The Omen" director Richard Donner made his true mark on the world of cinema with what most would agree is then and still is the greatest portrayal of 'The Man Of Steel' ever to grace the big screen. Massive in its production and filming schedule, one only has to listen to his directors commentary to understand just what was involved in making this masterpiece, not to mention filming the second Superman movie back to back with the first,he created an icon in cinema history. After its release Superman went on to amount a massive $300.000.000 plus around the world and director Richard Donner became one of the most sought after directors in the world, his movies dominated our big screens for more than 20 years. Yet when we think of Superman in the 21st century Im sure everyone would agree that Christopher Reeve was then and always will be seen as the man who made the world believe a man could fly,his portrayal as both Clarke Kent and Superman is nothing less than brilliant, just watch Superman Returns, actor Brandon Routh who was cast is a true compliment to what Christopher Reeve gave us over his 4 outings as Superman,he looks and even sounds,as uncanny as it was the first time he spoke as Superman, like Christopher Reeve....I think Superman fans around the world would agree that if Superman Returns was not a tribute to the legacy of Christopher Reeve then nothing was. Of Marlon Brando as Supermans father, one can only say this.."WOW" A motion picture that has stood the test of time and will do Im sure for many many years to come Christopher Reeve...Thank You..We Miss You
King Kong (2005)
Magnificent Truly Magnificent
Some say the Bible is the greatest story ever told,if so then King Kong must surely be the second. I remember well my mother telling me of when she saw the original Kong on its release in 1933,patrons were fainting in their seats, others got up and had to leave the theaters, its shear impact was about to become legend. So many many years later and that very film that inspired a very young Peter Jackson to become one of the finest filmmakers of our time returns as a spectacle that I have no doubt the amazing Fay Wray herself would have watched and been in awe at. Peter Jackson creates his own vision of the famous story while remaining faithful in so many scenes to the original, including at last his vision of the now infamous Spider Pit sequence, not for the squeamish it in itself lives up to the hype that the original lost footage from 1933 must have if it had survived the 1933 censors cutting room floor. Kong himself, enough said,a marvel of motion capture and cgi,the incredible creatures and jungle of Skull Island to Kongs mighty battle with not one but three V Rex's,with all this going on Peter Jackson adds what he fondly calls "The Quiet Moments" into his masterpiece, moments between Kong & Ann where you cant help but feel that lump in your throat begin to build up. My final thoughts are simply to thank Peter Jackson for bringing the legend back to life in such a way he so justly deserved.
Season of the Witch (2011)
Nick & Ron Together At Last
Take your hats off to Nicholas Cage,he must be the busiest actor in Hollywood at the moment, not confined to being seen in one new movie release a year,at the moment you will usually see him in two sometimes three new releases a year and I am so happy he chose to take on this role as did Ron Pearlman in this adventure. This is what going to the movies is all about, big names, big story and great effects that up until the end of the story never overshadow the story itself, and the ending of the movie is certainly worth the wait as the filmmakers throw everything they can at you while at the same time making the entire movie a beautifully filmed piece of story telling. Highly recommended for Nick Cage fans and fans of the days gone by when movies such as Dragonslayer and Excaliber thrilled us all.
Darkness Falls (2003)
Like A Fine Wine It Gets Better With Age
Darkness Falls is one and was one of those rare horror movies where all the pieces came together, the director, the crew and the performances by the actors,it simply is a rare example of a what I would consider one of the best and further more you certainly don't get many as good these days. The legend of The Tooth Fairy is taken to a whole new level with Darkness Falls and Darkness Falls is best watched with the lights out and the volume turned up,the magic of this picture is as you would expect, you think you know what is about to happen next and then it doesn't,then again it does but when you least expect it..brilliant. Its a shame that in todays horror genre that script writers cant come up with storys as downright spooky as this anymore, much like some of the classics that came aboard during the 80s Darkness Falls certainly falls into those gems category. Watch this with some friends as I said with the lights out and take note that if your tooth falls out for some strange reason remember not to wake up during the night when Matilda shows up
Ghoulies III: Ghoulies Go to College (1990)
Best Of The Ghoulies By Far
Its not rocket science, its just plain fun. After two reasonably successful incarnations with Ghoulies 1 & 2 director John Carl Bueacher and lets not forget the legacy he already had to his credit as with his own special effects company Magical Media Industries he created some of the now famous most gut wrenching and over the top scenes for the horror genre ever seen on the big screen with Reanimator,From Beyond and Dolls a few to mention and all in collaboration with director Stuart Gordon and producer Brian Yuzna, took the Ghoulies in a different direction, the one of comedy and it worked. To manys surprise this third installment did extremely well at the box office making its production costs and pre advertising back plus making a healthy profit, hence the somewhat forgettable Ghoulies 4 which really had nothing what so ever to do with the now well known Ghoulies at all. Within Ghoulies Go To College comes the great "BEER RUN" scene which had audiences howling plus watch for many an actor who went on to become rather well known in their own right,Eva La Rue,Jason Scott Lee and needless to mention the amazing Kevin Macarthy who was never interested in making big budget epics,he was always just happy to be still working after so many years in the industry, sadly he passed away at the tender age of 96 but here in Ghoulies he was hitting 72. This is a great movie to watch as a late night snack or if your just looking to watch a real gem from the late 80s because they don't make them like this anymore.
The Day After (1983)
Nicholas Meyers Masterpiece
I remember watching this here on the big screen as unlike the U.S when it was shown here in New Zealand it was shown on the big screens around the country....it haunted me for weeks. Now with children of my own in their early teens and with the movie being shown on Sky (no adds thank goodness) with them both I sat and watched this haunting experience once again. During the build up in the movie to the actual bombs exploding, and to me this was one of the scariest parts as the news reporters begin to announce the detonation one by one over advancing troops and NATO headquarters, both my children were in awe at just how scary and real it all really was, when the bombs exploded their mouths dropped to the floor..welcome to the wonders of our glorious nuclear age. I also once watched an interview with Nick Meyers who stated that before the movie was shown on the U.S network it was shown to members including the secretary of defense at the White House....according to Nick Meyers as the movie ended there was complete silence for almost a minute
