Captain Fantastic (2016)
Disappointing
This looked as if it might be quite good for the first 5 mins but for me it was a let it down. I just didn't like the main character, the dad, his complete lack of empathy and holier than thou attitude (not to mention hypocrisy) really grated on me. The script is dire in places and the plot is pretty dull too. Tbh, it is not one of the worst films I have seen but I truly wish I hadn't bothered.
Fisherman's Friends (2019)
Bloody lovely
Most enjoyable film I have seen in ages. Great story, well developed likable characters, full of charm, based on a true story that made me laugh and made me cry... beautiful setting, all the right ingredients that make a film special. So happy to have a new film that I can recommend to my friends and family and I intend to watch it and enjoy it with many of them again very soon.
Manchester by the Sea (2016)
Gosh, what a waste of 2 hours
I didn't like this film at all. I didn't connect with any of the characters, and they didn't seem to connect with each other. It's a film about people struggling with grief basically, a sad and harsh reality of life, but not entertaining to watch . I don't recommend it at all.
Brittany Runs a Marathon (2019)
Mildly entertaining, not really a comedy
Just finished watching this film. Parts of it were quite slow, and definitely not funny laugh out loud but I found the overall 'journey" a little bit inspiring in that it made me , a lapsed runner, want to get my running shoes on again. Unfortunately I think the film was let down by poor script and the main character had such a massive chip on her shoulder that it made her hard to like. If somebody asked me I would say it is worth a watch but only if there is nothing better on
Overboard (2018)
Sucker for the romance!
I certainly do not get all the hate here. Of course it is predictable. and yes it is silly, but it's done in a such a way that kept me smiling and entertained throughout, along with some laugh out loud and some genuinely heartwarming moments. Definitely worth a watch. By the way, I am not comparing this film with the original.
To All the Boys I've Loved Before (2018)
Very enjoyable.
This is a nice film, amusing, inoffensive, a quirky original story a little bit different from the usual run of the mill teenage rom- coms. I must say my daughter chose to watch this and I was a bit dubious at first but I was very pleasantly surprised. If you are looking for something to watch with your teenage daughter this film get's a big thumbs up from us.
Mr. Bean's Holiday (2007)
Absolutely hilarious, great family movie.
This film is an absolutely wonderful, funny, heartwarming film with beautiful scenery and great story. It is a film that all the family and adults can enjoy and though I have watched it many many times it never fails to make me laugh and fall in love with it again, as well as everyone that I have ever watched it with! If anyone has seen the TV episodes of Mr Bean and not liked it please don't be worried, this film is on a completely different level and a million times
better. Honestly it is a true gem. Just watch it!
The Great Gatsby (2013)
Just watch it and make your own mind up about this film.
I for one, thoroughly enjoyed this movie. The stand out for me, like for most people, is the cinematography, it is simply breathtaking. From the incredible lavish, beautiful, completely over the top scenes, to the cold, stark and heart wrenching scenes... also the soundtrack, a blend of atmospheric 1920's style music and jarringly modern which fits so unexpectedly well with the story. In some the camera angles become a bit dizzying, but other scenes are stylishly laid back and mesmerizing like a painting. Leonardo Di Caprio is absolutely superb as Gatsby and as far as I remember his character stays true to the one in the original story. Clearly the purists here disagree, I must read it again to see what the fuss is about!
About Time (2013)
Not for me.
I remembered vaguely not liking this film but when I somehow found myself watching it again recently I couldn't remember why. I actually found the first 35 minutes or so mildly entertaining so I though it was maybe worth giving it another go... I was wrong. As it goes on it just gets more and more annoying. It is just horribly sentimentalized, and it is way too long; seriously, someone should have taken a pair of scissors to that last 30 minutes...it is totally unnecessary and really cringe. I have given it two stars because it not the worst film I have ever seen, but I'll definitely be giving this one a miss next time.
Un peu, beaucoup, aveuglément! (2015)
Enjoyable, a bit quirky, a bit silly!
I really enjoyed this film, and so did my husband. Yes it is a little silly in places, but silly in a fun way, not a crass way like most American comedies I have seen of late. The characters are endearing, the story is an interesting concept, okay the final ending might be predictable but the journey to get their is original and kept us hooked from start to finish. It made us laugh out loud quite a bit too. Well worth a watch!
Les émotifs anonymes (2010)
Lovely film
This film is a true gem, genuinely funny, touching, heartwarming and beautifully shot. I have watched it many times with family and friends and have yet to find anyone that didn't love it. The only downside is having to read the subtitles (unless you speak French of course) but trust me, after the first few minutes you won't even think about it and you won't want to end!
The House (2017)
Absolutely dreadful!
This film is completely awful from start to finish. dire script, hammy performances and the plot is just silly, bad taste and NOT funny... well I didn't laugh once. Seriously I can't think of any redeeming factors. I didn't even like or have sympathy with any of the characters, they were all really lame. The only reason I watched it was because it was a free movie on a long train journey and having loved Will Ferrell in "Stranger Than Fiction" (which is a great film by the way) I thought it might be worth a go... well how wrong I was, this is quite possibly the worst film I have ever seen and I am annoyed with Virgin trains for putting me through it!
