9 Episodes of awesomeness.

The show raised enough questions to be answered in a following season. Interesting concept, flawless visuals and casting. Layers make great shows. Questions with answers. But hard to find answers are the best.

Old School (2003)
Intermittently funny
10 October 2019
It was okay. Generally crass, lowest-common-denominated comedy that didn't really hold up.

The plot wasn't great. The cast worked hard but just can't seem to get it off the ground. The movie is more for college kids, maybe even high schoolers! I can't really recommend it.

The Widow (I) (2019)
Mediocre-to-bad series
3 May 2019
A not particularly riveting story about a preposterous one-dimensional woman with a swishy ponytail on a mission in the Congolese jungle. Ridiculous, painfully slow and complicated, with peculiar subplots.

Chambers (2019)
Bingeable slow burner
2 May 2019
It's tremendous that Netflix is using its budget to create shows like Chambers. It's a creepy haunted transplant horror, but the new heart comes with strings attached. The entire cast is excellent. This is a gold standard for representation of Indigenous Americans who deserve to be seen on screen.

Why so under-rated? Steampunk masterpiece.
22 April 2019
London has some grandiose plans in this spectacular post-apocalyptic adventure. Why it was sabotaged by critics is beyond me. Stunning cinematography, interesting plot, great cast, excellent effects and visually outstanding. What's not to like?

Conclusion: Thoroughly enjoyable. Highly recommend

The Giver (2014)
Worth a watch
16 April 2019
Another movie that sat on my Vudu for a while. I liked it. Tells the story from the classic book, in a very different way.

A contemplative coming-of-age story, in a dystopian suburbia, with parables about the beauty of freedom, and the lies of social justice. Interesting.

Astonishing piece of work
13 March 2019
There has never been anything like Leaving Neverland. From the beginning it is elevated by the delicate handling of the testimony of the two men who allege that they were groomed and abused as children by a man they idolised.

It's a harrowing watch for many reasons. It's a devastating testament to the brutal realities of the grooming process and mechanics of pedophilia. The details are appalling and both men present a convincing case. But what the series makes really clear, is the power of obstinate blindness.

In conclusion: The question I'm left with is not how we should look at the cultural contribution of Michael Jackson, but whether we should engage with it at all.

Bloodline (2015–2017)
My guilty pleasure
1 March 2019
Lies, lies and more twisted lies. Full of tension, with a gripping storyline revolving around the volatile dynamic of the Rayburn family

The acting is superb. The show does a great job at keeping you from making your mind up as to whether you love, hate or love to hate the characters.

Conclusion: A must see Netflix Original that leaves you wanting more.

Tense undersea action
20 February 2019
This terror-thriller makes great use of the murky depths surrounding the characters. It delivers an hour or so of sustained physical and psychological horror and makes the most of its claustrophobic setting and is completely packed to the brim with tension. I recommend seeing this on the big screen to really get the impact of what the director accomplishes visually.

In conclusion: 47 Metres Down is great fun

Amélie (2001)
Whimsical
14 February 2019
Amélie caused a stir when it was released and you should have a look to see why. The eccentric characters are as delightful as the zappy quirky tone. From the storyline, to the cinematography to the soundtrack, it's stylistically interesting. Was blown away.

Essentially, it's a meditation on life. A young woman sets out to fix the problems of others as a way of ignoring the fact that she herself is damaged. One of the most memorable aspects is the wondrous central performance of Audrey Tautou.

The most remarkable fantasy of this movie is the Paris that Jean-Pierre Jeunet conjures up. It is supposed to be modern Paris, at the time of Princess Diana's death, but could be the Paris of 50 years before. The twisted realism makes Wes Anderson films seem quite ordinary.

Conclusion: Impossible to resist, heartily recommend.

Ozark (2017–2022)
Extremely entertaining
6 February 2019
This a series I will keep watching. It's brutal, gritty, scattered with dark humour and full of suspenseful twists. An excellent cast combined with an original plot. It may have some parallels with Breaking Bad, as it intelligently examines the psychology and sociology that fuel crime, but it takes a very different direction. As the plot unfolds, the decisions made by characters serve to twist the threads of an intriguing story. Top notch cinematography. Brilliant acting from Jason Bateman and Laura Linney.

Conclusion: Edgy and Unique. Highly underrated

It's very good. Engaging and powerful
6 February 2019
This is how the Dunkirk story should be told: by the veterans who survived. It's an arresting snapshot into the lives of soldiers who went to fight in Europe and ended up stranded in Dunkirk. Many of them lied about their young ages to enlist. I really enjoyed their vivid stories. There's plenty of genuine Dunkirk war film-footage used as a support throughout.

It's packed with interviews of the day-to-day experiences of the veterans, who tell of the horrors of war, their attitudes to the conflict, how they ate and formed friendships, and hopes for the future. The humility of the veterans represent a generation forever changed by the destruction of war, but the documentary also has some unexpected humour. Sometimes the understatement of a hero says it all.

One of the few civilians evacuated tells her story. A schoolgirl, stranded alongside the hundreds of thousands of soldiers, "It was hell on earth. I was only nine, but it is something you can't forget."

Conclusion: I found it outstanding, definitely more than just for the average history buff or WWII junkie.

Annihilation (I) (2018)
Will leave a haunting impression.
6 February 2019
I watched this when I discovered it was the next offering from Ex Machina writer-director Alex Garland.

The aliens have invaded, only in this take they've only grabbed one small portion of land. Given that the film is occasionally creepy and unsettling, it opens up like a strange, exotic flower. It's a world of mutated landscapes and creatures that threatens everything we have come to know about science and evolution. This is an unnerving and visually stunning experience that combines horror and trippy science to compelling effect.

Conclusion: Abstract. Watch it.
