On Saturday Night Live‘s cold open over the weekend, Donald Trump, played by James Austin Johnson, auditioned fictional serial killer Hannibal Lecter as his vice presidential running mate. Trump addressed a crowd outside the mock Manhattan courthouse where his hush-money trial is taking place.
“I don’t like being in court because they say very mean things about me while I am trying to sleep,” Johnson’s Trump said. The real Trump’s legal team had to find ways to keep the former president awake during his New York trial.
The former president spoke about the trial from the barricades outside the courthouse, referred to as “Trump’s new home,” and thanked the crowd for visiting him at his “cage at the zoo.”

There are a plenty of longtime Saturday Night cast members, yet there were no big exits — or hints of departures — on tonight’s Season 49 finale of the venerable NBC late-night program.
No SNL veterans were tearing up at the end of their sketches like Kate McKinnon did in the 2022 finale, it was all smiles and fist bumps at the curtain call, and, after another brutal joke swap, Colin Jost and Michael Che wrapped their 10th season together on Weekend Update by wishing everyone a great summer.
This was to be expected, given that no one from this year’s 17-strong troupe would willingly miss next year’s big celebrations – The Big 50.
Host Jake Gyllenhaal set the stage for what is to come in his opening monologue, noting that the finale was “the last episode before the big anniversary season.”

Saturday Night Live host Jake Gyllenhaal went through a maze of Southwest employees–and one Hudson News cashier, mistakenly–all in an effort to simply cancel his flight.
While being transferred to nearly ten different people, Gyllenhaal encountered customer service representatives who mispronounced his name all sorts of ways, those with odd racial views, those who demanded something in return, and unreasonably long and indecipherable audio-only confirmation codes, among other things.

Jake Gyllenhaal decided to showcase his vocal talent during the Season 49 finale of “Saturday Night Live.” The actors began serenading the audience with a rendition of Boyz II Men’s “End of the Road.” During the ballad, Gyllenhaal switched up the lyrics, claiming he was the very last choice to host for the finale. He croons, “They asked Pedro Pascal, but he wasn’t around. Zendaya said no because she’d be out of town. Even asked [Ryan] Gosling to come back again, just hosted three shows ago.”
The sing-along monologue also featured appearances from cast members Kenan Thompson, Ego Nowdim, Punkie Johnson and Devon Walker, who were dressed in the R&b boy group’s signature sweater and baseball cap.

Jake Gyllenhaal had a show-stopping “Saturday Night Live” monologue for its Season 49 finale, literally breaking out into song with a Boyz II Men spoof of “End of the Road.”
“We’ve come to the end of the road, it’s the last episode. Time to say goodbye, season 49 — you’ll be 50 soon,” the actor sang alongside impromptu bandmates Kenan Thompson, Ego Nwodim, Punkie Johnson and Devon Walker.
Riffing on the Grammy-winning R&b act’s 1993 Motown Records single, the highlight of the bit came with Gyllenhaal’s impassioned bridge where he listed all the hosts Lorne Michaels asked to come host for the Season 49 finale before him.
“They asked Pedro Pascal but he wasn’t around. Zendaya said no ’cause she be out of time. Even asked Gosling to come back again, just hosted three shows ago!” Gyllenhaal, capitalizing off his previously Tony Award-nominated singing chops, belted.

The 49th season finale of “Saturday Night Live” opened with James Austin Johnson as Donald Trump speaking at the barricades of a Manhattan courthouse, in a nod to Trump’s ongoing legal woes amid his presidential campaign.

It’s the end of the road for Saturday Night Live’s 49th season — and host Jake Gyllenhaal has the perfect way to say goodbye.
During his monologue that kicked off this week’s season finale, Gyllenhaal started out with some thinly veiled complaints that he’s stuck hosting the Season 49 finale and not the landmark Season 50 premiere. (He missed it by that much!) But he was still honored to host an SNL season finale, and he decided to commemorate it with a song, grabbing the mike to croon a version of the classic Boyz II Men torch song “End of the Road.

The season 49 finale of Saturday Night Live opened with Donald Trump (James Austin Johnson) making an assessment of his potential running mates, who ranged from the boot-licking to the face-eating.

Most notable, however, was Hannibal Lecter, played by a wide-eyed Michael Longfellow who was rolled into frame on a dolly while masked and straitjacketed like in the Oscar-winning film. During the Saturday Night Live monologue, Jake Gyllenhaal seemed to be trying to convince himself that he was Ok with hosting the season 49 finale, rather than the season 50 premiere.
“When you think of historic television seasons, the first number that pops into your head is 49,” Gyllenhaal said. “I mean, sure, you know, one more episode and I would have been hosting the premiere of the 50th season, but who cares?”
The Road House actor later broke out in song to the tune of Boyz II Men’s “End Of The Road,” listing off all the people the sketch comedy series asked to host the season finale before Gyllenhaal.
“You know, I was actually SNL‘s first choice to host the finale after a lot of people said no,” he joked. “I guess they’re all holding out for the 50th but not me.”

Jake Gyllenhaal took hosting duties for Saturday Night Live’s Season 49 finale ahead of the historic 50th season this fall.

James Austin Johnson’s Donald Trump returned to “Saturday Night Live” for one more appearance this season, with the cold open spoofing one of Trump’s many rants outside his criminal fraud trial. And, during this particular press conference, he ran through his shortlist for VP — from Kristi Noem to Hannibal Lecter.
To kick off his speech, the fake Trump noted that he was coming to viewers live from “my cage at the zoo,” speaking behind the barricades outside the courthouse. Naturally, he acknowledged the gag order put on him, though he complained that it “sounds like a challenge on RuPaul” more than anything else.
After following suit of the real Trump and complaining about how unfair the trial is to him, the fake Trump brought out his “short bus,” er, short list of VP candidates, though he caveated that the actual choice would be “determined by the winner of the Jake Paul-Mike Tyson fight.

It was a big night for Kristen Wiig on Saturday Night Live as she joined the Five-Timers Club. However, she was welcomed into the elite group by a bunch of mostly Non-Five-Timers Club members.
The actress and comedian kicked off her monologue, saying, “I am so happy to be back, and I am so excited because it is my fifth time hosting. So I’m officially in the Five-Timers Club!”
She then took a moment to acknowledge the sketch comedy show’s band, but shortly after, that’s when the celebrity cameos started, beginning with Paul Rudd, who previously joined the club in 2021.
“I also heard a rumor that you might be doing one of those five-timer sketches featuring awesome celebrity cameos,” Rudd said after popping up in the Studio 8H audience. “So, is there like a script or something I could look at for that?” But unfortunately, Wiig informed...

A star-studded group of veteran “Saturday Night Live” guest hosts were on hand this evening to welcome Kristen Wiig into the “Five-Timers Club.” But much to Wiig’s chagrin, most of them haven’t matched her feat of actually hosting “SNL” five times.
The former “Saturday Night Live” cast member made her fifth appearance as host — having previously hit the stage in 2013, 2016 and twice in 2020.
The stolen “SNL” valor actually began with a legit five-timer: Paul Rudd, on hand to welcome her from the audience..
“As a former cast member, it is very special,” Wiig said. “I’m really excited about getting my jacket tonight… they don’t just hand the jackets off to anyone.”
Well, not quite. Soon more stars came out: Matt Damon, Jon Hamm, Martin Short, Will Forte, Fred Armisen, Martin Short and Ryan Gosling. None of whom haven actually hosted five times yet.

Saturday Night Live took a break from politics in its cold open to riff on March Madness — more specifically how the women’s tournament has been a lot more exciting than the men’s competition.
The setup was TBS’ post-game coverage, with co-host Kenny Smith (Devon Walker) noting that 14 million people watched the the Iowa-Connecticut game, where Caitlin Clark faced Paige Bueckers.
Fellow host Charles Barkley (Kenan Thompson) chimed in, “The women’s is turning up the stars. Caitlin Clark is going as for State Farm, Subway, XFinity and Nike. I’m only doing ads for three of those companies.”
Later, the anchors go to Lsu coach Kim Mulkey (Heidi Gardner), who says she’s been made up to look “like the Riddler with the Talbots.”

The “SNL” 5-Timers Club has been around since December 1990, when Tom Hanks joked in his monologue that a person’s fifth time hosting is when they receive a membership card into the club. Hanks then left the stage and joined Steve Martin, Elliott Gould and Paul Simon in an expensive-looking set with hors d’oeuvres, waiters and a doorman. The iconic club set would be seen multiple times on NBC’s late sketch comedy throughout the decades, often (but not always) when a new host is anointed as a five-timer. Members of the club are always seen wearing exclusive jackets embroidered with a “5” badge.

Kristen Wiig finds herself in for a rude awakening in this week’s Saturday Night Live promo, when she discovers her old dressing room has been ruined by the show’s new talent.
“I’m finally home,” Wiig says in the promo as she walks down the halls of Studio 8H, where she worked as a castmember from 2005 to 2012.
“The best part of being home returning to your childhood bedroom — or in my case, dressing room,” she continues, adding that executive producer Lorne Michaels “promised they’d always leave it just the way I left it.”
As she approaches the room, Wiig muses that she can’t wait to “see all my old wigs” and “my favorite costumes,” but when she opens the door, she finds her things tossed haphazardly into boxes to make room for a mess caused by current inhabitants of the dressing room — SNL featured players Michael Longfellow and Devon Walker.

“I’m finally home,” a radiant Kristen Wiig says at the top of the first promo for her Saturday Night Live hosting stint this weekend. “And the best part of returning home: Your childhood bedroom — or in my case, dressing room. Lorne promised he’s always leave it just the way I’d left it.”
The former castmember finds that things aren’t as she imagined, however, as Michael Longfellow and Devon Walker have converted Wiig’s former digs into a man cave replete with a sword, lacrosse stick, guitar and video game console.
“Hey Kristine. Lorne said we could have your old room,” says Longfellow as she walks in.
“You like what we did with it?” asks Walker.
Let’s just say Wiig is less than happy.

For the first half of this weekend's new episode of "Saturday Night Live," hosted by "No Country for Old Men" and "Dune" star Josh Brolin, I couldn't stop trying to pinpoint what other performer he was reminding me of, even across a few different sketches. At first, I thought it might have been former "SNL" cast member Al Franken, specifically because of the slightly effeminate way he was portraying a couple of characters. Then it hit me: Josh Brolin rich, deep voice and his slightly off-kilter delivery style felt like the offspring of John Malkovich. Because whenever the frequently villainous John Malkovich is speaking, he's pretty much always talking like John Malkovich. There might be a slight accent every now and then, but it's pretty much always Malkovich being Malkovich. And the same can be said for Josh Brolin.
The good news is that this trait mostly works in Brolin...

Don’t mess with Josh Brolin when it comes to shooting hoops.
The Dune 2 star hosts Saturday Night Live for the third time on March 9, accompanied by musical guest Ariana Grande. Ahead of this weekend’s episode, SNL released a promo featuring Brolin facing off against featured players Molly Kearney and Devon Walker for an on-set basketball game.
In the promo, Brolin stumbles upon Kearney and Walker having a casual one-on-one game in Studio 8H. “Oh hey Josh, you wanna play?,” asks Walker, with a chirpy demeanor. But they quickly realize that Brolin isn’t here for a friendly match.
He immediately dominates the court, channeling Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and his Marvel villain role as Thanos.
After beating Kearney and Walker, Brolin howls “Anything’s possible” while pouring a bottle of orange Gatorade over himself, then spitting it out. When he notices that the cast members are tired out, he apologizes for getting too into it.

Josh Brolin seems to be taking his third Saturday Night Live hosting gig very seriously indeed, judging by the energy he’s bringing to the show’s latest promo.
In the set-up, Brolin, star of Dune: Part 2, is walking through SNL‘s Studio 8H when he happens upon cast members Molly Kearney and Devon Walker enjoying a friendly game of hoops.
Anything “friendly” soon gets shunted aside as Brolin, shouting “Kareem!” and “Thanos!” plays decidedly rough, knocking Kearney to the ground, among other bits of aggression.
“Anything’s possible!,” Brolin yells in triumph, only to quickly gather his wits and apologize for getting out of hand.
“Sorry,” he says. “I’m just excited to be here.” He then adds a sheepish, “You guys are super talented.”
Brolin last hosted the show in April 2012 and, prior to that, October 2008. His musical guest this Saturday is Ariana Grande.

He’s often seen courtside at Laker games, but it turns out Josh Brolin is a bit of a dunker himself.

“Hey guys, playing some hoops?” asks Brolin. “Oh, hey Josh. Want to play?” Walker responds, passing him the ball.
From there in, it’s game on. “Check-up chumps,” declares Brolin as he aggressively takes on the duo, channeling Kareem and, uh, Thanos, before dousing himself in Gatorade and screaming “anything’s possible!”

Then it was right into Joe Biden’s latest bad poll numbers and California Gov. Gavin Newsom, as played by featured player Michael Longfellow, pumping it up for Uncle Joe. With Biden’s status as the oldest Commander-in-Chief ever the core of the cold opening, the sometimes stumbling and confused Potus got credit not just for a good economy but also Beyoncé going country, and the return of the Shamrock Shake at McDonald’s.

The Saturday Night Live cold open tonight marked Donald Trump’s overwhelming victory in the South Carolina primary by skewering Republican senators humiliating devotion to him, even though he’s hurled insults at them, jeopardized their key causes and shown no loyalty back at them.
The skit had Lindsey Graham (James Austin Johnson), Tim Scott (Devon Walker), James Risch (Mikey Day) and Marco Rubio (Marcello Hernández) sharing a table at a hotel restaurant, munching on tater tots and pigs in a blanket.
“You know he once doxxed me, back in 2015,” Graham said. “They gave out my personal cell phone number in a speech to all his supporters. Had thousands of people call me up to yell at me. They threatened my life. Had to get a new phone. Switched to Verizon.”
Then, Graham said, “But you know what? I still think he’s the greatest president since Reagan.”
