Tell No One (2006)

Compelling, but it eventually bites off more than it can chew (or resolve)

This is a mystery-thriller that starts pretty strong. A man's wife goes missing and is presumed dead, and then eight years later, there are signs she may still be alive, all the while the man is framed for a crime or two he didn't commit and a grander conspiracy behind everything starts to become apparent.

If it all sounds like a bit too much that's because it is. Character after character and mystery after mystery keep getting introduced, and there's a lot to keep track of. Somewhere in the second half, I think I got lost, and I really was paying attention (no distracting phone; hand to god), knowing it was the kind of movie that could get complex.

A lot of it's resolved in a comically long explanation towards the film's end, and it all feels a bit unsatisfying. The explanation goes on and on, isn't linear, and then ends before actually, turns out there's some of the explanation that the audience didn't hear, and so here's some more. Again, it may have been a consequence of me losing the plot a little, but things being so plainly resolved felt underwhelming either way.

All that being said, I can't fault too many of the non-plot elements. I think the cast was solid and it was slickly made and presented. It just goes a bit overboard in complexity, and I feel like a bunch of side characters are only there to keep the mysteries going, and to be red herrings and stuff.

Overall, to me, it felt like a well-made meal that was left in the oven for a few too many minutes, and then over-salted. You can still recognise that a lot of it works and is solidly made, but the end result is inevitably a little disappointing.
